Buying (or leasing) a musical instrument, whether new or used, can be compared to shopping for a vehicle - the sales pitch is very familiar.

It's tempting to be dazzled by special effects and features more suited to a stage or recording studio than a parlour. It's also tempting to buy an instrument based on its looks alone (take another glance at the early Rhodes - it's pretty much ugly-all-day!). NB: one particular range of acoustic pianos comes to mind - made in the Far East - absolutely sleek, modern and beautiful to look at - run, don't walk....you'll be using it for kindling come winter.....

There are many points to be considered (as I've described throughout this website) in considering any instrument - and nowadays, price is the lowest factor where digital keyboards are concerned.

I cannot over-emphasise the need to consult a specialist - a professional - (no, not the trendy salesperson who plays pre-recorded riffs and emulations) as well as many hours surfing the internet for research into any instrument you are considering. If you buy something you love, you'll have a musical marriage made in heaven; if you buy something you (or your child) hates......you/they will probably quit!

I'm available either by phone or email (whether you are considering tuition or not) to advise you on what and where to buy or lease. However, even with over 40 years experience of keyboards, I'm not the final word or authority - just one voice. Speak with everyone you can - teachers, musicians, family, friends - and most of all - take someone with you if you are still undecided - then go home and think about it and do more research. If you provide transport from downtown Dartmouth/Cole Harbour, I'll even come along (especially if you're travelling to Toronto - I know several talented and highly-trained keyboard demonstrators who will happily entertain you in their stores for the whole day).

Why do I offer this service?

Because, as a musician and mentor, it is my duty and my privilege to ensure that anyone with a burning desire to make music has the best resources available to them in order to make informed choices.

I have no affiliations with any retailers or suppliers, nor am I sponsored by any manufacturer or distributor (definitely open to offers from Roland and Hammond though!! )
